Can you cast land?

FIRST MAIN PHASE You can cast any number of sorceries, instants, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers, and you can activate abilities. You can play a land during this phase, but remember that you can play only one land during your turn. Your opponent can cast instants and activate abilities.

When can you play a land?

A player who has priority may play a land card from his or her hand during a main phase of his or her turn when the stack is empty. Playing a land is a special action; it doesn’t use the stack (see rule 115). Rather, the player simply puts the land onto the battlefield.

What counts as playing a land?

To play a land means to put it onto the battlefield as a special action, and almost always from your hand (though a few effects allow this to happen from different zones, such as from the graveyard with Crucible of Worlds or from the library with Oracle of Mul-Daya).

Is playing the same as casting?

701.14d Previously, the action of casting a spell, or casting a card as a spell, was referred to on cards as “playing” that spell or that card. Cards that were printed with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference so they now refer to “casting” that spell or that card.

Can you play an instant in response to a land?

Playing a land is a special action; it doesn’t use the stack (see rule 115). Rather, the player simply puts the land onto the battlefield. Since the land doesn’t go on the stack, it is never a spell, and players can’t respond to it with instants or activated abilities.

Can you play a land after attacking?

Normally, you can play a land during either your pre- or post-combat main phase, so long as the stack is empty and you have priority, and you have not played a land that turn. You can cast spells before playing your land for the turn, or after. Similarly, you can attack before playing your land, or after.

Why did you not play your land last turn?

If you had played your land last turn, you’d be able to play the other land you drew and cast In Bolas’s Clutches this turn. But because you decided to hold off and bluff with the land, you’re now delayed a turn. Those are a couple reasons to play your lands. But there are also reasons to hold them.
